A Imagem da Melancolia was created in 2002 with the aim of exploring the renaissance polyphonic repertoire. The ensemble’s core is constituted of 5 recorder players but other instrumentalists or singers can be added according to the nature of the project. A thoughtful study of musical, literary and iconographical sources are the fundamentals of their interpretations, as well as comprehensive research on aspects of renaissance music theory and performance practice (such as tuning, melodic or harmonic theory).
A Imagem da Melancolia seeks to bring to modern ears a sound and musical experience unknown to a modern public.
